Well, you might be wondering if you need a tune up or not. Before I get to that lets go back a little, say 245+ years to 1777. That is when Alessandro Volta created the first spark plug. Then in 1858, Jean Joseph Étienne Lenoir, a Belgian engineer who developed the first commercially successful internal combustion engine in which the spark plug was used. During the early 1900's France was the dominate maker of spark plugs and is where the Frenchman Albert Champion who was a motorcycle racer was from and had immigrated to the United States in 1889 and sold his spark plugs to support himself.
Spark plugs are under constant chemical, thermal, physical, and electrical attack by corrosive gases at 4,500 degrees Fahrenheit, crushing pressures of 2,000 pounds per square inch (PSI), and electrical discharges of up to 18,000 volts. This unrelenting assault under the hood of a typical automobile occurs dozens of times per second and over a million times in a day's worth of driving.
So again, you say tune up my vehicle. Well, the term tune up prior to the mid 1980's consisted of spark plugs, wires, rotor, condenser, points, distributor cap, pcv valve, air filter and fuel filter. The tune ups back then could be done by anyone who had a wrench, and in a very short time. Tune ups needed to be done pretty often in order to keep the carbureted engines running at their peak performance. However, today's vehicles are equipped with sophisticated electronics to make engines more efficient, and the engine compartments are also packed and surrounded with many more electronics and designed to improve the economy of the vehicle. A simple spark plug change has now turned to a 1 to 6 hour or more job on some vehicles. But not to worry, today's top spark plugs are designed to last up to as much as 100,000 miles instead of the 12,000 in yesteryears. It's not just the design of the plug but the whole design of the engine and computers that operate it for it to be more eco-friendly and last longer.
Even though spark plugs last longer, they still can fail and go bad and should be inspected about every year or so. Usually, your engine light will let you know if you have a real problem with a plug, not to mention the poor running condition of the engine.
But today's tune ups may just consist of spark plugs, (sometimes wires), ignition coils, air filter, PCV system & fuel filter. Check your vehicles manual for the proper service interval for each. Or call a local automotive service center or myself and ask about service times on your vehicle. There are many other systems within the engine that can cause a poor running condition or misfire symptom. Even a system or circuit that is not even associated with the operation of the engine can affect it operation.
